Generic Viagra Questions

Home > FAQ Page > Generic Viagra Questions

Are generic drugs safe?

Generic drugs made in properly approved (FDA or equivalent) Laboratories work as well as the brand-name equivalent, and often cost considerably less. Generic drugs are cheaper because research, sales and advertising costs are much lower than brand name counterparts. Many insurance plans encourage you to accept the generic version of a drug whenever it's medically safe. Most states let pharmacists substitute a generic when appropriate and when your doctor approves it in line with local laws.

Q.Can you substitute generic for brand name drugs?

Sildenafil citrate (generic Viagra) does not fall into a "narrow therapeutic index" and high quality brands made in FDA approved laboratories are readily compared to Pfizer Viagra. You should however, always seek your doctors opinion regarding appropriate prescription and dosage.

Very few drugs have a "narrow therapeutic index," meaning that a small variation in dose can cause problems, such as too little effectiveness or too many side effects. Drugs that do fall into this narrow therapeutic index include: phenytoin (brand name Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), valproic acid (Depakene), divalproex sodium (Depakote), digoxin (Lanoxin), warfarin (Coumadin), lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith), levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levoxyl), and theophylline (Theo-Dur). Do not switch these drugs from brand to generic—or vice versa—without your doctor's approval and close supervision.

Always talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or both before asking for a substitute.

Q.How is generic Viagra different than Pfizer's Viagra?

Viagra is the brand name of Pfizer pharmaceutical company and Caverta/Veega/Silagra/Omnigen/Meltabs are also a brand names for the drug sildenafil citrate. The generic Viagra ® active ingredients are the same, therefore it works the same way.

Sildenafil citrate is the generic name for the drug the FDA approved in 1998 for erectile dysfunction/impotence in men. Generic Viagra is sold under many brand names. The brands of recommended on Drug Store Best Buys have the exact active sildenafil citrate ingredient and are the chemical equivalent of Viagra ®.

Q.How can generic sildenafil citrate be so much less expensive?

Just like any generic pharmaceutical, generic Viagra is less expensive (below $4.00 per dose) compared to prices for a brand name equivalent. The reason that you can buy generic Viagra for less is that we don't pay for branding, marketing, advertising or a costly sales force or overhead. We pass those cost savings directly on to you.
